Obituary

Charles "Dale" Byrd, 74, of Vernon, Texas, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, July 26, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 31, 2025, at 9:00 am at Sullivan Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gene Krieg and Mr. Chris Norcross officiating. Burial will follow at Wilbarger Memorial Park under the direction of Sullivan Funeral Home.

Dale was born on March 28, 1951, in Wichita Falls, Texas, to the late Charlie and Ozella "Pat" Patterson Byrd. He grew up in the close-knit communities of Odell, Oklaunion, Crowell, and Quanah, Texas, and attended Vernon High School.

A proud veteran, Dale served in the United States Army from 1971 to 1973. His strong work ethic and versatile talents led him to a wide range of professions. He worked over two decades as a jailer and dispatcher for various counties in Texas, including Hardman and Andrews Counties. In addition, he worked for W.T. Waggoner Estate as a ground's keeper on the Santa Rosa, He was a truck driver, landscaper, rodeo cowboy, and skilled horse trainer and rider.

On October 6, 1984, Dale married the love of his life, Sandra E. Rampone, at McKinney Acres Baptist Church in Andrews, Texas. They built a life rooted in love, family, faith, and laughter.

Dale had a larger-than-life personality. A proud cowboy and true country boy, he was known for his quick wit, his love of a good joke, and his deep devotion to his family. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, and he never missed an opportunity to tease a Dallas Cowboys fan – particularly his son-in-law, Josh. He was famous among family and friends for his backyard grilling and for crafting the best hot sauce this side of the Red River.

A faithful Christian and member of the Baptist denomination, Dale loved his God with a quiet steady devotion that guided his life.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Sandra E. Byrd; seven daughters: Sandra Faye Ballard and husband Josh of Vernon, TX; Lynette Downs and husband Bryon of Lawton, OK; Margarita Rampone; Jacqueline Saunders and husband Joughey of Frisco, TX; Monica Rampone-Martinez and husband Jason of Haltom City, TX; and Sonya and Christal Byrd of Wink, TX. He is also survived by one son, Jesse Dale Byrd of Frisco, TX; two sisters, Patricia Williams and husband Joe of Wichita Falls, TX, and Virginia Bailey and husband Charles of Ben Wheeler, TX; as well as fourteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Larry and Gary Byrd.

Dale's legacy is one of laughter, strength, loyalty, love, and his faith and devotion to God's word. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and love him.

Visitation will be Wednesday, July 30, 2025, from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Sullivan Funeral Home.

Memorials can be given to Boys & Girls Club of Vernon or Wilbarger County 4-H Club.
