Dentler Schubert Erdmann, 93 of Lubbock, Texas, passed away Friday, September 25, 2026, in Lubbock, Texas.

Funeral services will be held, Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 2:00 pm at Sullivan Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Wilbarger Memorial Park under the direction of Sullivan Funeral Home.

Dentler was born Sunday, December 25, 1932, in Vernon, Texas. He was the son of the late Robert Henry Erdmann and the late Alice Augusta Niemeyer Erdmann.

Dentler graduated Vernon High School in 1950. He entered the University of Houston in 1950. After one year of college, he joined the Navy where with great pride and joy he served for four years. He then attended University of Hawaii in 1956.

After college, Dentler began his teaching career in Los Angeles at Belmont High School that spanned from 1960-1998. He loved Belmont and loved the students even more, speaking of them even toward the end of his life. One of his favorite assignments for Belmont High was to chaperone students on a trip to Los Angeles’ sister city, Nagoya, Japan. He was also awarded the honor of being California’s Teacher of the Year in 1975 and later had a football stadium near Belmont High School named after him – Erdmann Stadium. He liked to mention he never missed a track meet at Belmont, and he loved telling about fishing in the High Country.

The door to his home in Los Angeles was always open and he greeted all students who entered. Many stories, students, good food and much laughter were shared around his large dining table. The hats he wore at Belmont were many, and his influence was still felt years later as past students continued to phone him, and some visited him in Texas when he was in his 80s.

After retiring from teaching, Dentler worked for the Dodger organization as a greeter for the suites occupied by the rich and famous as well as by those who loved the game of baseball as much as he did. The love of Texas and family helped him to retire yet again, this time in Texas.

Derntler spent the rest of his days in Lubbock, making new friends and enjoying staying in contact with his California friends by social media and occasional visits to his old stomping grounds in LA. He enjoyed the gym, his Lutheran Church and volunteering in Lubbock.

Dentler leaves behind seven siblings, Alvin Erdmann, Judi Erdmann, Bettie Lawlis, Nelson Erdmann, Brenda Chapman, Sheri Irvin and Dawn Potter, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Dentler is preceded in death by both parents and three brothers, Roy Erdmann, Rolice Erdmann and Robert Erdmann. Also preceded in death are four sisters, Patricia McConnell, Lameh Taylor, Velma Graham and Sarah Kunkel.
