He graduated from Vernon High School in 1967 and Midwestern State University in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Sheridan, in 1969, and they had one child Melissa. They divorced in 1972. He married Debra Parker in 1974 and had two children: Seth and Cindy. They divorced in 1987. He lived with his longtime girlfriend Patricia Gause from 1987 to 2004. Don was very close to his stepsons Chris and Michael Gause.

Don always had a thermos of hot coffee everywhere he went and was always prepared to serve hot coffee to any visitors of his home. Don was very involved in attending his children's and grandchildren's school and sports events. He was known for his kindness, generosity, humor, and wisdom. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
