Doris Corene Condo Mims passed away Thursday, April 27, 2023, in Austin Texas. Doris was a longtime resident of Vernon, having moved there in 1970.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at 1:00 pm at Faith Methodist Church in Vernon, Texas. Burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery under the direction of Sullivan Funeral Home.

Doris was born October 2, 1934, in Pampa, Texas to Joseph and Nancie Condo. She was the eldest of three children and would forever be cast as the faithful caretaker of those around her. She graduated from Pampa High School in 1953, and boarded the train bound for Baylor University in Waco to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, completing her studies in 1957.

Just before graduation, she married Johnny Welborn, with whom she would spend the next 27 years and raise their three children. After numerous relocations due to Johnny's work as a Methodist pastor, they settled in Vernon in 1970, both working at the state hospital, Vernon Center North. Doris was the nurse in-charge of the substance abuse facility in the hospital, and the experience would define her professional career for the next 30 years. She was an active member in various regional and state substance abuse organizations and received her professional counseling certification to further her career.

She moved to Lubbock in 1986 to manage the fledging detox center, operated by the City and County of Lubbock. It was there that she met and in 198­9 married her beloved Ray Mims. Ray was a second chance for Doris, and they had so much in common that it was hard to keep track of all their fishing, hunting, camping, and travel escapades. If there was a body of water, they believed it had fish in it and they needed to try and find them. They camped on the river, in the mountains, in the South Texas heat, and anywhere else their old van would take them.

Doris and Ray moved back to Vernon, where she went back to work at the state hospital as a psychiatric nurse, finally retiring from the state, but finding she could not sit still. She started working as the classic "lunch lady" in the Vernon ISD. This was a perfect job for a former nurse, conditioned to taking care of people and being engaged. She loved all the kids, especially the little ones.

Doris was a long-time member of Faith United Methodist Church, serving as treasurer and various other lay-person roles. She loved her Happy Huggers group and missed the companionship when she was no longer able to attend. Doris was one of the most caring, loving, kind, and respectful people you will ever meet. She considered you her family, no matter your background, status, or position in life. Her 'family' was not limited or bound by blood; she loved you because you were you, and if you needed her, she was there! She had an unusual need to give, and her gifts were her kindness, care, and unconditional love.

Doris is survived by: her children, Sharon Welborn of San Migual de Allende, Mexico and sons Bill Schoolcraft and family, and Isaac Schoolcraft; Bud & Lisa Welborn of Austin, and their three children, Blake, Betsy & Isabella; and Alan Welborn of McKinney, and his three children, Amber Burgess and family, Jason Welborn, and Josh Welborn; her sister-in-law Brenda Condo, and nieces and nephews, Joe Winton of Pampa, Kandice Dull of Pampa, Terry Simmons of Cotton Center, Ray Condo of Pampa and Brad Condo of Pampa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Mims; her brother Sam Condo; her sister Mary Winton, and her brother-in-law Gib Winton.

Visitation will be Monday, May 1, 2023 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Sullivan Funeral Home.
