Obituary

John Allen Milner, Jr., 91, of Vernon, Texas passed away Sunday, April 5, 2026, in Vernon, Texas.

Visitation will be on Saturday, April 11, 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm at Sullivan Funeral Home. There will be a private family service at a later date.

John was born December 3, 1934, in White City, Texas to John Allen and Ruth Dunn Milner. He married Carol Ditmore Milner on May 13, 1960.

He was raised and lived all his life in the Hines Community, attended Hines School until it was consolidated with Vernon Schools. He graduated from Vernon High School where he played on the basketball team that went on to win third in the state. He served in the National Guard, shortly after high school. He has farmed in the Hines community for over 70+ years. He served as a Wilbarger County Commissioner for 8 years. When their kids were younger, he coached for various Boys & Girls Club teams. He was also a 4-H leader assisting with Wilbarger County Stock show. He was honored as Outstanding Rural Citizen of the year in 1983. He earned his private pilot's license and had a small private airplane for several years. His greatest love was antique cars. He was one of the original enthusiasts involved with coordinating the first cruise in Vernon. During the 2025 Summer's Last Blast, he was honored with the Legacy Award. He has participated in every Summer's Last Blast Cruise since it began. He has shared his love for cars with his children and grandchildren. The last few years, his grandchildren chauffeured him during the Cruise. His cars have been used for Proms, weddings, parades, and other special events. He was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church.

He is survived by his daughters, Tammie Wrinkle of Vernon, and Trisha married to Darren Harvick of Schertz, TX and his son, Thomas (Tommy) Allen Milner married to Melanie of Vernon. He is survived by 7 grandchildren, Erin (John Mark) McLain of New Braunfels, TX, Mendi (Jacob) Ramos of Bulverde, TX, Jessica Mowrer of Wichita Falls, TX, Ky Allen Wrinkle of Vernon, Craig Allen (Danielle) Wrinkle of Wichita Falls, TX, Colby Thomas (Holly) Milner of Lewisville, TX and Mila Milner of Lubbock, TX. He is blessed with 4 great grandchildren, Karson John Wrinkle, Luke Allen McLain, Mason James Ramos, and Ellie Marie Milner.

He is proceeded in death by his wife of 61 years, Carol Milner on June 22, 2021 and his daughter, Terrie Mowrer on April 8, 2018.

The last 3 ½ years he has been blessed to be in the care of the amazing staff at Eagle Flats Village. We appreciate all the love and support they have shown him and us, we are truly like family.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Beyond Faith Hospice for their care during his last days.

Memorials: Meals on Wheels of Vernon. John and Carol were dedicated weekly drivers for many years and saw this is a great outreach for the community. Carol also served on the Board of Directors for many years.
