Leona May Matthews, 87 of Vernon, Texas, passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2026, in Vernon, Texas. A private family service will be scheduled at a later date.

Leona was born Thursday, September 8, 1938. She was the daughter of the late Walter Byrd and the late Lillie Byrd. She loved the outdoors and was a member of the Church of Christ. 

Leona is survived by two sons, Don Mathews of Chillicothe, Texas and Joe David Matthews of Macks Creek, Missouri. She also leaves behind numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

Leona is preceded in death by her son, Daniel Matthews.
