Dr. Steven Wayne Coats

Born June 30, 1971, in Vernon, Texas to Jo Wynn Coats and Michiel Lee Coats, Steven was enveloped in a nurturing environment, fostering his early love for music. His glorious vocal talents shone brightly throughout his youth as he participated in various musical endeavors—from church choirs to prestigious performances at Carnegie Hall. His passion for music not only brought joy to himself but also to countless others, showcasing his vibrant personality and artistic flair. It's clear that music was an integral part of Steven's identity, a gift that he shared generously with the community around him.

In academia, Steven excelled, after earning his undergraduate and Master's degree from Midwestern State University, and finishing with his Ph.D. in School Psychology from Texas Woman's University, Steven dedicated over 20 years to shaping young minds within the school systems. His commitment to mental health was evident in every role he undertook—from school psychologist to forensic psychologist—where he not only assessed but also advocated for fair treatment within the legal system. His work as a mental health advocate, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community, highlighted his dedication to breaking down stigmas and fostering support networks for those in need.

Steven's contributions extended beyond direct service to mentorship and leadership within professional organizations. His active participation in the American Psychological Association and other bodies illustrated his desire to uplift the field of psychology, ensuring future generations of psychologists receive the guidance they need to thrive.

The love story between Steven and Travis is a beautiful chapter in his life. Their romance blossomed through a modern means, reflecting a contemporary love that was deep-rooted in shared values and mutual passions, such as their love for dogs and adventures. Their wedding was a celebration not only of their love but of their commitment to family and community. Together, they envisioned a life filled with laughter, adventure, and a shared mission to rescue dogs in need, reiterating their compassionate natures.

Steven is survived by his husband Travis Miller; Sister, Michelle DeWoody; Brother-in-law, David DeWoody; Nieces, Brianna and Ashley Singh; his Cousins, Bax Ekern, Stephanie Kolban, Brant Ekern, and Henri Naylor, as well as many extended members of the Ekern family.

The service for Steven will be held on May 3, 2025, at 11:00 am at the First Christian Church located at 3701 Taft Blvd. in Wichita Falls, Texas.
